Escanaba, Michigan
Home of the UP State Fair
Located on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, Escanaba is the Upper Peninsula's second largest city with just under 14,000 residents. Centrally located to the west of Manistique on Hwy 2, Escanaba is home to the "UP State Fair." (Yes, for those of you who didn't know, the Upper Peninsula sometimes likes being considered a state of its own.)
Beyond the fair which takes place in July and brings thousands of Yoopers and tourists into the city, visitors can enjoy one of the many events scheduled at Ludington Park on the waterfront. Here, on any given weekend evening from late spring through early fall it is not unusual to hear musicians playing in the band shell, or talk to artisans displaying their wares. And for the younger crowd that doesn't mind a little cold water…the beach at Ludington Park is ideal for swimming and sun worshippers will appreciate the sandy beach and the northern sun.
But don't think you need an event to see art and enjoy the flavors of Escanaba. Stroll the downtown streets for pottery, paintings, hand-made baskets and more. Stop in one of the local restaurants for fresh fish from the bay or buy a pound of smoked fish to take back as a reminder of your Upper Peninsula visit.
Boasting fun year round, Escanaba offers excellent fishing opportunities on the open water and the ice. When the "Little Bay" freezes over, shanty town takes over as anglers vie for that prized walleye. The sight of the shanties, ATVs, and snowmobiles on the ice is a reminder of what life in the UP is all about… the great outdoors. Speaking of the outdoors, there are plenty of opportunities for snowmobiliers and skiers. Access to the groomed trail system is within easy reach, and the big hills aren't far off.
