Big Rapids, Michigan - Ferris State University
Nestled in the Northwestern corner of Mecosta County, Big Rapids, a small city with a population of approximately 6,500 people is home to Ferris State University. Ferris State University was founded in 1885 by Woodbridge N. Ferris with the intent of providing technical skills for the high school aged student graduating from Big Rapids area schools. Since that time, Ferris State University has become one of the leading technical schools in the nation, graduating as many as 2500 students per year mostly in technical fields from all around the world. Additionally, many of the graduates return to technical fields for the auto, steel, and manufacturing communities in Detroit, Flint, and Grand Rapids Michigan.
Big Rapids, primarily a college town, is also a small tourist attraction for individuals interested in hunting, fishing, boating (particularly in the Canadian Lakes region of Morley-Stanwood), and river tubing. Boasting one of the most active tourist areas in the West Central Michigan area, Big Rapids continues to grow and thrive amongst the beauty of the Manistee Huron National Forest.
